6 yoga tips to help improve lung health

Prioritize the posture that opens the chest, exercise moderately, maintain regular breathing, and exercise in a place with fresh air that is good for the lungs.

Yoga helps the body stay flexible and supports the respiratory system by combining movement with breathing control. However, to benefit the lungs, practitioners need to note some of the tips below.

Start training session by a few minutes take a deep breath

Theo Times of Indiainstead of doing yoga poses right away, you take a few minutes to adjust your breathing. Inhale slowly through your nose, letting your belly expand, then exhale slowly and last longer than the inhale.

This warm-up method promotes better contraction of the diaphragm, helping to bring air fully into the lungs and allowing the body to get used to the breathing rhythm before exercising. At the same time, deep breathing also helps the body relax, reducing the feeling of tightness in the chest area.

Prioritize chest-opening positions

Postures that help expand the shoulders and chest will create conditions for the chest to expand better when breathing. Some suitable moves include cobra, bridge, cat-cow, and warrior pose. When doing this, focus on stretching your chest instead of trying to bend your back too much. Each position should be held for a few even breaths, without holding your breath while holding the movement.

Mix fit Breathing with each movement

An important principle in yoga is that movement goes with breathing. Inhale when opening your chest, lifting or stretching your body, exhale when bending or returning to the starting position. This combination will stabilize breathing, maintain concentration, and limit shortness of breath or fatigue when exercising.

Choose a moderate intensity

Yoga being good for the lungs does not mean that the longer you practice, the more effective it is. Beginners only need to practice about 30 minutes per session, maintaining about 3-5 sessions per week. If during exercise you feel short of breath, dizzy or have to breathe continuously, you should reduce the intensity or rest. The goal is to maintain regular breathing, not causing the body to lack oxygen because of overexertion.

Practice in fresh air

Air quality directly affects the effectiveness of respiratory exercises, you should practice yoga in a well-ventilated place, avoiding smoke, dust or chemical odors. If you practice outdoors, you should choose early morning or late afternoon when the air is pleasant. For people who are sensitive to pollution or pollen, exercising indoors with good ventilation is more suitable.

End the workout by relaxing, regulate breathing

Practitioners should not do child’s pose or lie down to relax, helping their heart rate and breathing rate return to a stable state. Spend an additional 3-5 minutes breathing slowly to give your body time to relax after exercise, while also reducing the feeling of fatigue and tightness in the chest and shoulders.
