The US Embassy in Moscow has issued a medical alert following reports of a suspected case of pneumonic plague in the Irkutsk region. The report refers to the death of one person, as well as quarantine measures and the closure of some hospitals in Irkutsk. The American side said it continues to closely monitor the situation.
We are talking about 28-year-old employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute Daria Shipilova, who died on October 2. Russian authorities say the cause of death was “pneumonia of unknown etiology” and that no occupationally related microorganisms were found in her biological samples. At the same time, almost 200 people who had contact with her were taken under medical observation, and restrictions were introduced in a number of medical institutions.
The Embassy encourages U.S. citizens in the region to follow the guidance of local health authorities, avoid affected health care facilities, and seek immediate medical attention if they develop a high fever or respiratory symptoms. Those who have been in the area of possible outbreak are advised to monitor their health for 14 days.
The warning also reminds that the fourth, maximum level of the US State Department’s recommendation for Russia remains in force – “do not travel.” American citizens in Russia are still advised to leave the country.
