UAE | “Weight Loss Challenge”: 72% of students suffer from “obesity”

Ras Al Khaimah Hospital announced the results of the “The Greatest Weight Loss Challenge” 2024 competition, one of the social responsibility initiatives, which it organizes annually, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Community Protection, and aims to educate participants and motivate them to reduce their weight. The fourth session witnessed the participation of 18,000 people from across the Emirates, more than half of whom were residents of Ras Al Khaimah.

The “Challenge” revealed that the weight of the heaviest participating children was 178 kilograms, while 72% of those registered in the student category were overweight.

The hospital handed out the awards at its main headquarters, in the presence of Khaled Al Shehhi, Director of the Ministry’s Representative Office in Ras Al Khaimah, and honored 24 winners from the individual categories, one winner from the institutions category, and two winners from the schools category, while each participant reduced, on average, 9 kilograms of weight.

Pakistani Anwar Ali (31 years old) won the men’s physical challenge category, receiving 9,000 dirhams, after losing 30.2 kilograms of his weight. The Indian Akbar Shahid and the Egyptian Haitham Al-Safi achieved second and third places, after reducing their weight by 22.6 and 21.1 kilograms, respectively, with the first winning 4,400 dirhams, and the second winning 2,100 dirhams.

In the women’s physical challenge category, Mohsana Kalisam, an Indian residing in Dubai, won first place, after losing 23.3 kilograms of her weight, earning 6,900 dirhams.

The second and third places went to the Indians, Shahana Roxana Yazir and Amila Abbas Mangato, with the first receiving 3,800 dirhams and the second 1,800 dirhams, after reducing 19.4 and 18.3 kilograms, respectively.

Ras Al Khaimah College of Dental Sciences won the Institutional Teams category. The exemplary English school in the school staff category and the student body mass index category.

The “Challenge” continued for 12 weeks, and its session this year (the fourth) represented the largest and most comprehensive since the launch of the health competition, achieving remarkable success, becoming the most prestigious competition in the country. Emphasizing his message aimed at raising awareness of the danger of “obesity.”

The “Challenge” attracted a diverse group of participants, with 68% males, compared to 32% females, 84% of the participants were under 40 years of age, and 85% of those registered in the individual categories fell within the “Obesity” category.
