Necrosis of the umbilical area after abdominal liposuction

HanoiA 42-year-old woman had abdominal liposuction and scar removal at a spa. A few days later, she suffered extensive bruising and necrosis in the area around her navel and waist.

The patient arrived at Hanoi Medical University Hospital on April 15 after about two weeks of treatment at the hospital in Thanh Hoa. The results of a computed tomography scan showed that the patient had diffuse subcutaneous tissue infiltration in the abdomen, flanks, and subcutaneous fluid collection.

Doctor Hoang Hong, Head of the Department of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, said the patient’s current condition is relatively complicated. The skin of the abdomen, navel, and around the navel were extensively necrotic and infected.

“If this necrosis is not treated promptly, it can lead to a serious, life-threatening infection,” Dr. Hong said, adding that the patient is receiving comprehensive care and, when stable, will be completely debrided. necrotic skin, restore the fascia of the abdominal wall and navel area.

According to the doctor, the department often receives cases of complications due to beauty treatments at unlicensed cosmetic establishments, not performed by professionals. Some liposuction patients had punctures in their lungs, liver, or intestinal perforation, causing peritonitis. There are cases of cerebral embolism causing hemiplegia, aphasia, fascial necrosis of the abdominal wall, pulmonary embolism, internal organ embolism, and even death.

The doctor recommends that people with beauty needs should choose a reputable, licensed facility with doctors who are well-trained in cosmetic plastic surgery to avoid complications.
