Formula 1: the Turkish Grand Prix officially back from 2027

It’s the return of a familiar track to the roads of the Formula 1 world championship. From 2027, the Turkish Grand Prix will return to the program, as part of a five-season contract until 2031 inclusive.

While the 2026 world championship is currently in full swing, under fire from critics, that of 2027 will experience two changes. Exit the Dutch Grand Prix, organized in Zandvoort, and that of Barcelona, which will however return in 2028 alternating with that of Belgium.

To replace these two races, the Formula 1 organizers therefore chose Turkey and Portugal. The latter will be scheduled for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

“One of the most exciting and demanding circuits in Formula 1”

The Turkish Grand Prix has been organized a total of nine times in the history of the Formula 1 world championship. Between 2005 and 2011, it was an annual stage of the season, notably won three seasons in a row by the Brazilian Felipe Massa (Ferrari). 5.3 kilometers long, the Turkish Grand Prix is renowned for being very technical, particularly due to its numerous climbs and descents.

“I consider Turkey’s return to the Formula 1 calendar as a clear reflection of the great trust placed in our country – in our strong organizational capacity, in our modern sports and health infrastructure and, of course, in the famous hospitality of the Turkish people,” President Erdogan said in a statement shared by Formula 1.

“We are delighted to return to this incredible and dynamic city of Istanbul from 2027 to thrill all our fans in Turkey and around the world on one of the most exciting and demanding circuits in Formula 1,” said Stefano Domenicali, Formula 1 boss.

“As a city, Istanbul represents a cultural bridge between Europe and Asia, offering a unique blend of history and tradition, combined with a cutting-edge approach to sport, business and entertainment,” the executive added.

The Turkish GP had not completely disappeared from the radar since 2011 since two editions were held in 2020 and 2021, due to disruptions to the calendar caused by Covid-19. These two races were won by two Mercedes drivers: Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, the latest winner on this circuit.
