The Colombian cyclist Cristian Camilo Muñoz, from NU Colombia and former UAE Team Emirates rider, died this Friday in Oviedo at the age of 30 as a result of complications suffered, including a bacterial infection, due to a fall last Saturday in the Tour du Jura, in France.
“For the NU Colombia cycling team it is very sad to report the death of its rider Cristian Camilo Muñoz, which occurred in the last few hours in Europe as a result of medical complications derived from the accident suffered last Saturday during the Tour du Jura,” confirmed the Colombian team.
According to the team, after the fall the 30-year-old cyclist from Ventaquemada was treated at a medical center for an injury to his left knee, before traveling to Spain to compete in the Vuelta a Asturias. “Once the team arrived in Oviedo, Cristian was evaluated again in a clinic, where the health personnel detected a difficult-to-manage infection that again required specialized care. In the last hours, his clinical evolution became complicated and despite all the efforts of the medical team, Cristian died this Friday morning,” he said.
Muñoz had been part of NU Colombia since 2024 in the Continental category, where he obtained victories in stages of various races such as the Anapoima Classic and the Vuelta a Boyacá. In addition, he was champion of the mountain awards in the RCN Classic in past seasons.
“Those who knew him remember him as a close person, always generous with his teammates and with a sporting spirit that inspired those around him. As a sign of mourning and respect for his memory, the Nu Colombia cycling team withdraws from the Vuelta a Asturias. The coaching staff, the riders, the managers, all the team staff and Nu Colombia accompany Cristian’s family in this moment of deep pain, and extend their condolences to his loved ones, friends and the entire cycling community. UEA Team Emirates, Muñoz’s team between 2019 and 2021, also mourned his death. “We are deeply sorry to learn of the death of our friend and former teammate Cristian Muñoz. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Cristian,” the team said in a statement.
