Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from Roland Garros

The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz announced this Friday that he will not defend his title at Roland Garros, the second ‘Grand Slam’ of the season that begins on May 18, due to the injury he suffered in his right wrist ten days ago at the ATP tournament in Barcelona.

The number two in the world was injured during his first match at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell-Trofeo Conde de Godó and after withdrawing from this tournament and the Mutua Madrid Open, he has decided to be “cautious” and not play either the Masters 1000 in Rome or the ‘big’ Parisian one, where he has won in the last two years.

“After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing is to be cautious and not participate in Rome and Roland Garros, waiting to assess the evolution to decide when we will return to the court. It is a complicated moment for me, but I am sure that we will come out stronger from here,” the one from El Palmar wrote, giving the bad news on his social networks.

Alcaraz’s concern had gone from less to more until the worst part was confirmed. The Murcian arrived in Barcelona after losing the final of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 and had a difficult debut in Barcelona, ​​where he acknowledged some discomfort. “Nothing new,” he said then, but the next day he withdrew from the tournament and, two days later, he also resigned from the Mutua Madrid Open.

The champion of seven ‘greats’ had this Friday’s test as crucial, recognizing that the injury was more serious than expected. Alcaraz said goodbye to the rest of the European tour on land, the Rome and Roland Garros tournaments that he defended as current champion. The Spaniard had won the last two years in Paris and will miss his first ‘Grand Slam’ since Australia 2023.
