ChessUimonen was an award-winning chess player.

Finland represented in the World Chess Championship team competition for seniors Matti Uimonen has died at the age of 67.

Uimonen died in the middle of the ongoing World Championships in Albania. He was part of Finland’s second team.

“Matti was appreciated by everyone and always nice and friendly to everyone. The Lahti Chess Club’s graduate quickly rose to the level of champion candidate and won, among other things, the team speed chess championship bronze in the club’s ranks. On the first table, as he always remembered to tell himself”, Chess Liitto remembered Uimo in its press release.

Self in addition to playing, Uimonen was the vice-chairman of the Helsinki Chess Club.

“Matti is remembered above all for his tireless work for the sport. For years, he worked as a software developer, but he always found time for his biggest passion, chess,” wrote Fide.
