The final assault on the 2026 Italian Cup of the 420 and 470 classes has begun, which will be awarded on Sunday at the conclusion of the Livorno stage, which is part of the program of the International Sailing Week: 226 registered racers in total, of which 150 are minors and 81 women, who will compete on 113 boats, coming from all over Italy. The race course is located in a body of water abeam the Naval Academy. The rankings, both for the stage and overall of the Italian Cup, will be separated between the two classes. The latter will allow the best to access the world and European championships next summer. Three races are scheduled every day until Sunday, although yesterday the strong wind forced the organizers to postpone the start several times for safety reasons, eliminating one heat.
In the 470 class, both races were won by the two Slovenian crews of the “JK Pirat sailing club” of Portorož, who are now in the first two places in the provisional general classification. In the lead is the pair Martin Fras-Mija Skerlavaj, followed by two points from Ana Planinsic and Teo Gerzelj. In third place, and first among the Italians, one of the three boats of the Antignano sailing club, led by Marcello Miliardi and Emma Maltese. The crews competing in the 420 class are mostly minors, where the fight for the top positions is very close. After the first two tests, the Circolo vele Vernazzolesi team is in the lead, with a first and a second place. Behind them, just one point behind thanks to a first and third place, the Italian-Ukrainian crew of the Imperia Yacht Club, which is once again ahead of the other all-female boat from the same club by just one point: the girls in fact finished second and third in the first two regattas.
The Naval Academy crew performed well: eighth in both tests, the two students are currently in 11th place in the cumulative ranking after two heats. This morning we return to the water for three more tests, which could confirm these balances of power, overturn them or bring out new contenders for the title. The challenges of the J-24 class will begin in the early afternoon, which will be held in a regatta course located abeam the Naval League. The awards ceremony for the 420 and 470 classes will take place on Sunday 3 May afternoon at 5.30 pm, in the main hall of the Naval Academy, in the presence of the commanding Admiral, Alberto Tarabotto, together with that of all the other classes competing in the second weekend of the International Sailing Week 2026.
