‘Monchi’ becomes the new general sports director of RCD Espanyol

Director Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo ‘Monchi’ will be the new general sports director of RCD Espanyol, a position from which he will lead the club’s Sports Area, seeking to strengthen the team’s sports structure, the ‘perica’ entity reported this Monday.

In the statement, Espanyol explained that “at an organizational level, Monchi will report directly to Mao Ye Wu, CEO of RCD Espanyol, and Alan Pace, president of RCD Espanyol and Velocity Sports Partners/ALK Capital, the entity’s investment group.”

In this way, the different sports areas will maintain their current executive directorates, which will become dependent on the new General Sports Directorate headed by “one of the most recognized and reputable executives in European football.”

Furthermore, the Catalan club values ​​the Cádiz native’s career, which began at Sevilla CF 26 years ago. “Considered one of the main drivers of the most successful period in the history of Sevilla FC, he participated decisively in the construction of a project that won 11 titles between 2006 and 2023,” highlighted the press release.

Monchi’s record with the Seville club includes seven Europa Leagues, two Copas del Rey, one European Super Cup and one Spanish Super Cup in his two stages, from 2000 to 2017 and from 2019 to 2023, as sports director of the Seville team, where “he established himself as one of the most influential figures in sports management.”

Subsequently, he developed his career at AS Roma and Aston Villa FC, a competitive project established in European positions and a regular protagonist in continental competitions such as the Champions League and the Europa League, until he left the English club to become the new president of CD San ​​Fernando.

Thus, Monchi sent a message to the fans of the Andalusian club. “It has been a very thoughtful decision in recent weeks and I am sure that it will be beneficial for all parties. I am going to the place where they have shown me their affection from minute one, where they have valued my idea of ​​work and, above all, where they have respected my status as president of the CDSF 1940,” he assured.

“I am sure that the future that begins today will require greater effort and greater dedication from me to try to live up to the demands, but I am going with all the enthusiasm possible because, when someone is shown affection, they have to give everything to respond to that trust,” he added.
