Sinner beats Medvedev and reaches his sixth consecutive Masters 1,000 final in Rome

The Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, world number one, will fight for the title of the Rome tournament, the fifth ATP Masters 1,000 of the season, after beating the Russian Daniil Medvedev (6-2, 5-7, 6-4) this Saturday, in the resumption of the match suspended on Friday due to rain, the Russian Daniil Medvedev (6-2, 5-7, 6-4), and will try to lift the trophy against the Norwegian Casper Ruud.

After the water suspended the duel between the transalpine and the Russian on Friday night with 6-2, 5-7, 4-2 in favor of the world number one, the one from San Candido finished the job 18 hours later and guaranteed himself to play his sixth consecutive ATP Masters 1,000 final and take one more step towards the Career Golden Masters: winning at least once the nine tournaments in this category, just as the Serbian Novak achieved Djokovic.

This Saturday, Sinner kept his serve blank and had two balls to the rest. However, he had to wait for his next serve to close the contest after just 15 minutes at the Foro Italico. By reaching the final in the three clay-court Masters 1,000 of the season, he emulates the Spanish Rafa Nadal, the only one who had achieved the feat until now, and also on five occasions (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013).

Before, he suffered the unspeakable. After finishing the first set in just half an hour, he began to suffer dizziness and cramps and was hampered in a second set in which Medvedev had three balls to make it 0-4 and which closed with a 5-7. He recovered in the final set, in which he scored a break in the third game, but rain forced the postponement.

Now, the Italian, who hopes to become the first local champion of the tournament in 50 years – since Adriano Panatta in 1976 – will face the Norwegian Casper Ruud, much more rested after eliminating the Italian Luciano Darderi (6-1, 6-1) with authority in the other semifinal, gaining access to the final in Rome for the first time in his career.
