Belgian Alec Segaert won the twelfth stage of the 109th Giro d’Italia. The 23-year-old pulled ahead of his approaching pursuers after 175 kilometers between Imperia and the town of Novi Ligure near Genoa. For the young professional, who only attacked three kilometers from the finish, it is one of the greatest successes. His compatriot Toon Aerts came second, Uruguayan Guillermo Thomas Silva third.
The strong sprinters led by the Frenchman Paul Magnier and the Italian Jonathan Milan had previously been left behind on the slight climbs in category three and had no chance of reaching the finish area. No German made it into the ten best drivers of the day.
Eulálio remains first in the overall standings
In the overall standings, Afonso Eulálio from Portugal increased his lead slightly. Thanks to bonuses, he is now 33 seconds ahead of the two-time Danish Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard. The Dutchman Thymen Arensman is third with 2:03 minutes behind Eulálio.
There should be no shifts at the top of the overall ranking on Friday either on the mostly flat stage between Alessandria and Verbania on Lake Maggiore. Since it gets a bit hilly with two small climbs in the last 30 of the 189 kilometers, it could be a win from a breakaway group or perhaps a bunch sprint. The tour ends on May 31st in Rome.
