“The profiles of the selected players are sufficiently different from each other. There are players of different profiles available for different matches and different game situations. So Tuchel was not interested in who are the biggest stars, but who is the best fit for each other on the field,” continues the expert.

Kotimäki I think the age structure of the team is a suitable mix of experience and youth. He also considers the team to be balanced.

“The locker room is not crowded with big egos. The team now also has the threat and strength to run behind the opposition’s defense.”

In principle, Kotimäki considers it a good thing that Tuchel, as a German coach, looks at British football and the England national team from a slightly “outsider” point of view.

“Yes, the English football scene is still conservative and clinging to the past. A foreign coach has a stimulating and shaking effect on the structures.”

“And Tuchel’s player selections also show that. That not all the safe players loved by the people are included, but that we dare to stick to our own views and look at the overall picture of the team’s chances of success, and don’t care about the hype around us.”

Ride However, it will probably be ice cold for Tuchel if the World Cup matches do not go as well as the supporters had hoped.

“However, I personally would see the greatest importance to be what England’s playing looks like. This must also be accepted by England’s football bosses,” says Kotimäki about Tuchel’s position as head coach.

“Maguire not being selected was a really big surprise for me. He might not have been a starter in the starting line-up, but he has really solid experience in several prestigious competitions and his leadership would have been extremely valuable for England.”

“He played a relatively strong season, and Maguire would have been a perfect weapon with his mastery of the main game in situations where England need a last-minute goal,” says Kotimäki.

“He has a lot of competitive experience and leadership. He has also had a strong season at Everton.”
