Former UEFA President Michel Platini has filed a criminal complaint in France against FIFA President Gianni Infantino and five other former Swiss justice and football officials. A spokesman for Platini announced this a few days before the start of the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, as the AP news agency reported. According to the 70-year-old, there was a conspiracy to prevent his election as FIFA president more than ten years ago.
The former French national player accuses the accused of, among other things, false accusations and undue influence. In addition to the criminal complaint, Platini’s lawyers also want to file a civil lawsuit against FIFA for damages. Platini had already made similar allegations to the Swiss authorities in 2022.
Instead of Platini, Infantino became FIFA boss
Infantino was elected president of the world association in 2016. He previously worked as general secretary of the European Football Union UEFA under then President Platini. The Frenchman was long considered the favorite to succeed then FIFA President Sepp Blatter.
However, Platini and Blatter were targeted by the Swiss justice system in 2015 because of a payment of two million Swiss francs to Platini. Both were charged in a trial for alleged fraud against FIFA, but were finally acquitted in an appeal last year.
