Bundesliga: RB Leipzig separates from coach Ole Werner

“We have intensively and conclusively analyzed the past season again in the last few days. On Tuesday evening we made the decision to fill the position of head coach,” sports director Marcel Schäfer was quoted as saying on Wednesday: “Nevertheless, we have come to the conclusion that further development in terms of content and a changed approach are necessary for the tasks that lie ahead of us,” it continued.

Werner still has a contract in Leipzig until 2027. A successor should be presented soon. The assistant coaches Tom Cichon and Patrick Kohlmann also have to go. RB Leipzig wants to inform promptly about the successor to the position of head coach, the composition of the coaching team and further collaboration with assistant coach Jan Zimmermann. According to consistent media reports, the Argentinian Martín Demichelis will be his successor. The 45-year-old former Bayern Munich defender was previously the coach of RCD Mallorca.

There is said to have been dissatisfaction with Werner, especially among supervisory board chairman Oliver Mintzlaff and the global football department around Jürgen Klopp and Mario Gomez. The new game idea implemented by Werner was not convincing there, and RB reportedly needed too much luck to qualify for the Champions League.

Leipzig only paid around two million euros to Werder Bremen for Werner in the summer of 2025. Although the coach only signed for two years at the time, the intention was definitely a long-term collaboration. Cesc Fàbregas was actually supposed to be signed, but the Spaniard stayed with his club Como 1907 and led them to the Champions League last season.
