Basketball national coach Álex Mumbrú will also become coach of the Italian Euroleague club Virtus Bologna next season. “We consulted intensively at the DBB, had very good discussions with Álex and Virtus Bologna and came to the decision to allow him to have this dual role,” said Ingo Weiss, President of the German Basketball Association. “The national team continues to be of outstanding importance for national coach Mumbrú; the upcoming qualification windows are very important for him.”
The 47-year-old European champion coach has been in office since August 2024 and was already a club coach in Valencia before becoming the German national coach. “I am very grateful to the DBB for giving me the opportunity and giving me the chance to be head coach at a Euroliga team,” explained Mumbrú.
“He will continue to serve us as national coach with great enthusiasm and full commitment.”
The DBB actually has the rule that a national coach is not allowed to train a club at the same time. With Mumbrú’s predecessor Gordon Herbert, the DBB prohibited the world champion coach from having a dual role after the 2024 Olympic Games. At that time, Herbert moved to the Bundesliga club FC Bayern Munich. “He will continue to be available to us as national coach with great enthusiasm and full commitment. There are still many goals together,” emphasized Weiss, referring to the current exception for Mumbrú.
The German national team’s next two World Cup qualifiers are in Riga against Israel (July 3) and in Bamberg against Cyprus (July 6) at the beginning of July. The World Cup will take place in Qatar from August 27th to September 12th, 2027. Germany is not automatically seeded as defending champions.
