Frustration, curiosity – and a new travel destination: The German national soccer team’s surprising exit from the World Cup against Paraguay was also noticeable in search queries on the Internet. In connection with Jonathan Tah’s disallowed goal to make it 2-1, Google data analysts said: “Where can you file a complaint against FIFA referees?” and “Can you reverse a referee’s decision?” one of the biggest outliers in the search engine.
Others wanted to know more about the imposing appearance of Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. You searched something like “How tall is Paraguay’s goalkeeper?” Gill measured 1.99 meters and was one of the most striking players.
A search query increases by 800 percent
Some users apparently thought one step further: the search query “Paraguay vacation” increased by 800 percent within twelve hours. The very country that knocked Germany out of the tournament suddenly became a travel destination for the Germans.
