American golfer Bryson DeChambeau allegedly tried to get the President of the United States Donald Trump’s for help with The Open’s rules dispute.
DeChambeau was penalized two strokes in the major for being deemed to have improved his ball placement by stepping on the grass behind the ball.
Golf journalist Geoff Shackelfordin by DeChambeau tried to avoid punishment and wanted Trump involved in the proceedings. The matter has also been reported by, among other things Yahoo sports.
DeChambeau negotiated the matter with the race management for a long time, but the penalty remained in effect. Trump was reportedly not contacted, and according to the race directors, Trump was not in contact with them either.
DeChambeau is known as a Trump supporter. He celebrated his 2024 US Open win with the Trump family. Trump has also been involved in a golf video filmed for DeChambeau’s YouTube channel.
Penalty messed up DeChambeau’s competition. Before the penalty, he was in the top fight, but due to two strokes, he fell further from the top and no longer joined the fight for victory.
DeChambeau eventually played out the contest. He ended up tied for 14th place with a score of four under par.
The Open was won by a New Zealander Ryan Foxwho played a score of ten under par. The victory was the first of Fox’s career in a major tournament. Runner up Cameron Young missed him by one stroke.
The Open, i.e. the British Open Championship, is one of golf’s four major competitions. The competition was played at Royal Birkdale.
DeChambeaun a possible attempt to involve Trump is said to be related to the president’s involvement in the banning scandal at the soccer World Cup.
American striker Folarin Balogun had received a suspension from the tournament for a red card. The ban became conditional after the president called the president of Fifa Gianni Infantinolle.
Balogun was sent off in the 61st minute against Bosnia and Herzegovina after colliding with a defender to Tarik Muharemović. The elimination came in the team’s first playoff round match.
Balogun finally got to play in the quarterfinals against Belgium.
