Request from the Federal President: “Let the children stay up later”

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has before the first knockout game of the Austrian national team an unusual request at a World Cup since 1954.

“Dear parents,” the 82-year-old began his speech in a video shared on Facebook. He has a request on behalf of the children. “Let them stay up a little later today, Thursday,” Van der Bellen said.

He explained: “Yes, watching TV late into the night is not good. I know that. But turn a blind eye this time so that the children who want to can cheer on our national team live. You keep memories like that with you for the rest of your life. And on top of that, we are currently in the last few days before the holidays.”

He wishes all the children “a lot of fun cheering”. The game in Inglewood near Los Angeles takes place at 12:00 p.m. local time. In Austria it is then 9 p.m.
