Referee investigation, prosecutor’s office Milan is divided on Rocchi and Inter: what’s happening, what’s new

The investigation into the alleged system of conditioning of referee appointments is moving towards dismissal, while the part that concerns the hypothetical knocks on the Var room of Serie A in Lissone, Brianza, seem destined to end up on the table of the Monza Prosecutor’s Office responsible for the territory. The documents will also end up in the sports justice system – as requested by the FIGC federal prosecutor’s office which has until now remained silent because they are documents covered by investigative secrecy – and also in the parliamentary anti-mafia commission which intends to verify any infiltration or links with organized crime.

Referee investigation, the news

The starting hypothesis was that the alleged pressures altered the regularity of the matches. There are five people under investigation in total, including former referee Gianluca Rocchi accused of the crime of sports fraud in collaboration with members of Inter. According to the accusation, Rocchi would have combined – with other unidentified subjects – the designation of the referee Andrea Colombo (liked by Inter, according to those investigating) for the Bologna-Inter match in April 2025. He would have done the same thing with the designation of the referee Daniele Doveri for the semi-final of the Italian Cup between Milan and Inter, in order to avoid the designation of the same referee for the possible final and subsequent championship matches, also in this case considered to be unwelcome to the Nerazzurri.

Furthermore, during the Udinese-Parma match on 1 March 2025, Rocchi allegedly violated the VAR protocol, which provides for the autonomy of the Lissone room, knocking and inducing the call toOn field review of the referee Fabio Maresca for the purposes of awarding the penalty to Udinese. Under the magnifying glass of the investigators there would be alleged pressure on the VAR during some matches, Inter-Verona in the 2023-24 season (that of Bastoni’s elbow to Duda, ed.) and Udinese-Parma in the same championship.

The list of contested matches also includes Torino-Inter last April which, according to the accusatory hypothesis, would have been designated with the prior consent of the club. The investigators did not find direct wiretaps between Inter managers and Rocchi. Tomorrow the time expires for the prosecutor Ascione, if he does not sign it will be the deputy Ielo who will define the file by next week, before the summer break, with the request for dismissal having not collected sufficient elements to demonstrate that the alleged pressures have altered the regularity of the matches under investigation.
