Three and a half weeks after the national team’s World Cup flop, the German Football Association is about to start the future with the new national coach Jürgen Klopp. According to dpa information, there was to be another joint meeting of the supervisory board and shareholders’ meeting of DFB GmbH and Co. KG on Thursday morning. However, the DFB itself denied this – there were still further details to be clarified and there was no invitation to the committee members.
The national trainer contract must be “finally” approved by the supervisory board and shareholders. The 59-year-old Klopp was the favorite from the start and also the only candidate from the association leadership around President Bernd Neuendorf to succeed Julian Nagelsmann. He vacated the head coach position a few days after the disappointing World Cup exit in the round of 16 against Paraguay in Foxborough on June 29th.
Klopp presentation this week?
Klopp is set to receive a four-year contract until the next World Cup finals in 2030. The approval of the supervisory board and shareholders’ meeting is considered certain after the DFB leadership with President Bernd Neuendorf and deputy Hans-Joachim Watzke was able to reach solutions with the various negotiating partners in the past few weeks. Klopp’s presentation could possibly take place on Friday at the association’s Frankfurt campus.
For a long time, a high hurdle on the way to signing Klopp was his contractual commitment to Red Bull as Head of Global Soccer. However, with managing director Oliver Mintzlaff, the DFB and also Klopp were apparently able to agree on solutions that saved the association in particular from further high costs in addition to the million-dollar severance payment for Nagelsmann.
Nagelsmann, who turns 39 this Thursday, still had a contract as DFB head coach until the 2028 European Championship.
An earlier version of the article said that the DFB supervisory board met on Thursday. This has been denied by the association.
