Instagram has launched a new update that will allow users to edit comments

Instagram, which is owned by Meta, announced a new update that allows users to edit comments they wrote in posts, an option that was missing for many years and was a source of frustration among many users. According to the update, a comment can be edited up to 15 minutes after it is published, after which the option is locked.

The operation itself is quite simple: users can click on the Edit option that appears below their comment, edit the text as they wish, and confirm the change with a check mark. During this time window, the response can be edited an unlimited number of times, so if additional corrections or wording changes are required, they can be easily made.

Until now, users who wanted to correct an incorrect or embarrassing comment had to delete it entirely and rewrite, an action that sometimes caused a loss of context or confusion in the discussion. The new option offers an interim solution that allows correcting spelling errors, rewording or clarification, without deleting the conversation history.

However, the 15-minute limit is not accidental. In large technology companies, there is a high sensitivity to the possibility of changing content after it has received comments, likes or shares, which may mislead other users or change the meaning of the discussion in retrospect. A relatively short window of time allows on the one hand to correct human errors, and on the other hand reduces the risk of misuse of the feature.

The change is expected to mainly affect the nature of the discourse on the platform, which is sometimes considered fast, impulsive and sometimes offensive. The possibility to edit comments may reduce momentary mistakes and prevent overly sharp wording, especially among users who rush to respond without thinking about the wording.

On the other hand, there are those who believe that the update does not fully solve the problem, since after the 15 minutes have passed, no change can be made, even if it is a significant mistake. Users who later discover an error or problematic wording will still be forced to delete the comment and rewrite it.
