A security breach was discovered in the iPhone – Apple hastened to issue an update

The updates are designed to fix a weakness in the system’s notification mechanism, the Notification Services service. According to the details of the fault, alerts that were marked for deletion could have actually been saved in the device’s memory, a situation that creates the possibility of exposing sensitive content such as incoming messages, one-time codes or other personal information. This is a fault marked as CVE-2026-28950 and defined as a significant security breach.

Although Apple does not usually list the full details of the breaches in real time, in order not to allow attackers to take advantage of the information before users are updated, reports in the technological media indicate that this is a weakness with wide implications. According to the same reports, a similar mechanism was used in the past to recover messages from encrypted apps like Signal through the device’s notification database.

This means that even if a user deleted a message or did not open it at all, remnants of it may remain in the system, in a way that may allow external parties to recover the content. This is a particularly sensitive scenario in an age where a significant part of personal communication is carried out through encrypted applications.

The update was released as an emergency update, which indicates the level of urgency that Apple attributes to the problem. Meanwhile, the very fact that two different system versions received the same patch indicates that the vulnerability affected a wide range of devices, both old and new.

The version iOS 26.4.2 is intended for more advanced devices, starting with iPhone 11 and above, while iOS 18.7.8 is also available for users who chose to stay with an older operating system. In doing so, Apple actually extends the protection even to those who have not switched to the new versions.

Besides fixing the vulnerability, the new update also includes performance improvements and small additions, including new features for Apple’s music service and new emojis. However, Apple emphasizes that the main reason for the update is security. And for those who haven’t tried it, to update the operating system you have to go into the device settings, select software update, and install the latest version as soon as possible.
