Art and technology at Pont Neuf, JR’s project in Paris

The supporting structure, a constantly ventilated double-walled inflatable system, will reach heights varying between 12 and 18 meters, using approximately 20,000 cubic meters of air as the main architectural element. This engineering approach allowed the overall weight to be limited to just 5 tonnes, drastically reducing the need for heavy transport and the impact on the historic foundations of the bridge, which dates back to 1607.

The visitor experience, accessible free of charge and continuously, integrates a sound dimension curated by Thomas Bangalter and a digital visual component developed in collaboration with Snap Inc’s AR Studio..

Through augmented reality technology, the public will be able to view digital content inspired by Étienne-Jules Marey’s chronophotography, superimposing virtual tracks on the physical structure of the “cave”. Artist JR said:
“My vision is rooted in both the past and present of this iconic bridge and art is a transformation and a way of renewing the way we look at the world around us“.

Thomas Bangalter described his acoustic contribution as: “The intention to sculpt a sound material from electroacoustic elements, whose resonance will mineralize the structure of the Cave with its monolithic and mystical appearance“. The project is financed exclusively through private funds and the sale of artistic works, without resorting to government resources, under the coordination of the L’Amicale des Ponts de Paris fund. From a sustainability perspective, the entire technical apparatus is designed for maximum sobriety: the ballasts are made of decarbonised steel plates produced in France, intended to be remelted and recycled at the end of the event. Emmanuel Grégoire, deputy mayor of Paris, noted: “The work invites us once again to see Paris in a new perspective.”
