Qualcomm opened a research and development center in Hanoi

Qualcomm’s research and development (R&D) center opened in Hanoi on the morning of May 12, aiming to develop many core technologies.

Compared to the announcement in 2025, Qualcomm’s R&D Center in Vietnam expands its research fields, not only AI but also towards multi-fields. In the early stages, the center focused on artificial intelligence and system-on-a-chip (SoC) development, before expanding into automotive technology, the Internet of Things (IoT) and other advanced technologies.

According to Qualcomm, the center in Hanoi is part of the company’s global R&D network, taking advantage of Vietnamese technology human resources and promoting cooperation with domestic partners.

The Vietnamese engineering team here will directly participate in the design and development of new technologies and coordinate with other Qualcomm technical teams globally. Technology solutions developed in Vietnam also aim to serve both domestic and international markets.

The enterprise said that expanding R&D activities in Vietnam aims to build a team of engineers meeting international standards in the field of semiconductors and software. The company will also cooperate with domestic universities and training facilities to develop high-tech human resources.

At the event, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui Hoang Phuong said that Qualcomm’s opening of an R&D center in Vietnam is a “strategic milestone”.

He explained that Qualcomm not only invests in technology applications, but also invests methodically in research and development with Vietnam, accompanying in research, development and human resource training. “This is extremely meaningful for Vietnam,” said the Deputy Minister.

According to him, Vietnam has many advantages to attract high-tech investment such as a stable socio-political environment, favorable location in Southeast Asia, a network of 19 free trade agreements (FTA) and a young workforce and abundant STEM human resources.

Leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology asked Qualcomm to continue expanding research and development activities in Vietnam, focusing on designing AI semiconductor chips, IoT, and 6G mobile connectivity. He wants the company to join hands with domestic businesses to develop AI devices, smart devices and artificial intelligence infrastructure in Vietnam.

The Ministry also asked Qualcomm to promote cooperation with domestic universities, research institutes and businesses, support the training of high-quality human resources and promote the formation of a domestic semiconductor supply chain.

According to him, this move affirms belief in Vietnam’s “increasingly important” role in the global technology picture.

The technologies Qualcomm deploys in research and development in Vietnam have many similarities with the list of 10 strategic technology groups recently issued by the Government. In particular, Vietnam aims to master digital technology and next-generation mobile network technology; robotics and automation; advanced biotechnology and biomedicine; advanced energy and materials technology; semiconductor chip technology; cybersecurity and quantum technology; marine, ocean and underground technology; aviation and space technology; high-speed rail and urban rail technology.
