The latest installment in the celebrated racing series, Forza Horizon 6, arrived on the market and soon achieved incredible success. Set in the long-awaited virtual recreation of Japan, from neon Tokyo to mountain roads, the title has attracted over six million plays, breaking records and garnering critical acclaim.
Records on and off Steam
The commercial triumph was obvious even before the official release on May 19. The game has recorded more than 500,000 pre-orders on Steam alone, with revenue of nearly $30 million. The early access period, which began on May 15, set a record of 172,093 concurrent games, twice as many as its predecessor. The official release confirmed massive interest, and the numbers continued to climb, reaching an impressive peak of 284,139 concurrent games on Steam on May 21st. On the same day, it was announced that the total game base, with Xbox and Game Pass services, exceeded six million.
Criticism and play: Japan is a triumph
Critics almost unanimously declared Japan the perfect destination and the greatest strength of the game. On the aggregator Metacritic, Forza Horizon 6 holds a rating of “universal acclaim”, with reviewers praising the vision of Earth in the rising sun. IGN described the map as “the most authentic and car-friendly yet”, calling it “a Japanese theme park for cars”. It is this combination of huge urban spaces, such as five times the size of Tokyo compared to the cities of previous installments, and beautiful rural landscapes with mountain passes for ‘tough’ races, that creates a world that feels alive. Many also welcomed the return of the bracelet progression system from the original game, which offers a better structure without limiting the freedom of the series.
A technological breakthrough for a new generation
The decision to drop support for the old generation of Xbox One consoles allowed the studio to take advantage of the power of modern hardware. Forza Horizon 6 was developed exclusively for the ninth generation of consoles and PC. The computer version stands out with advanced graphic features, introducing ‘ray-traced’ global lighting that makes cars and the environment more realistic. Owners of Xbox Series X and S consoles also enjoy a polished experience. The ‘Performance’ mode of operation on both consoles ensures a flawless 60 frames per second, while the ‘Quality’ mode at 30 frames per second offers a higher resolution and includes ‘ray-tracing’ effects on the vehicles themselves, which is a significant visual shift.
A well-known formula refined to perfection
At its heart, Forza Horizon 6 doesn’t deviate drastically from the proven formula. Driving is still fantastic, offering a blend of arcade accessibility and simulation elements. However, there are numerous improvements that enrich the experience. The sound of the car is, according to many, the best so far, with a special emphasis on the realistic echo in tunnels. The vehicles look more detailed, and the physical model provides a better grip, especially with the steering wheel. Although some critics have complained that the story is a bit shallow and the dialogue predictable, the general consensus is that this is the most complete and polished Horizon to date, a package that offers hundreds of hours of top-notch racing fun.
