The spider got its name from Pink Floyd

He and his research team have now found a completely unprecedented three millimeter long spider in Colombia.

Anyway, Osvaldo and his group went to the city of Ibagué in the mountains of Colombia and found a small spider living in the walls of the houses, which he named Pikelinia floydmuraria.

According to custom, the discoverer of a new animal species gets to name it. Floydmuraria refers to Pink Floyd and the wall, which is therefore Latin mura, and wall means pertaining to a wall. The spider really likes living in the walls. Certainly also in the brick walls that Pink Floyd’s song refers to.

In the process Osvaldo and his group measured one living in the Galápagos Islands extremely precisely Pikelenia-spider’s genitalia and could say that the little spider is related to the one found in Colombia.

The discovery will not sway the world’s stock exchange rates, but it will help us understand how the network of life around us has progressively developed.

This newly discovered spider, which is a couple of millimeters long, can eat insects over a centimeter in size. It weaves its webs near lamps, perhaps to catch insects attracted by the light.
