Italy and Türkiye sign an agreement for the study of seismic danger

The agreement arises from the shared need to strengthen scientific protocols in two territories, the Italian and the Turkish one, characterized by high exposure to tectonic phenomena and similar critical issues in the management of emergencies and the protection of cultural heritage.

The agreement focuses on the systematic sharing of geological data, expertise and technologies, defining a series of joint activities ranging from pure research to the training of technical staff. The areas of intervention established by the protocol include thedevelopment of innovative mathematical models to evaluate seismic and volcanic danger, the field study of geological data collected in the aftermath of highly intense earthquakes and the optimization of early warning systems, also known as early warning, integrated with the most recent satellite observation applications.

The alignment of monitoring networks and the standardization of information flows between the two countries are considered essential requirements to implement the effectiveness of civil prevention measures. Regarding the strategic objectives of the signature, the President of INGV, Fabio Florindo, declared: “We express great satisfaction at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between our Institute and AFAD. Italy and Turkey share long experience in the study and management of seismic risk. This agreement consolidates scientific collaboration, promoting the exchange of data and expertise, an essential element for risk prevention and mitigation, as well as for the safety of our communities“.

The practical implementation of the Memorandum will make it possible to unify the statistical analysis methodologies of earthquakes and to refine the mapping of active faults through continuous comparison between the respective operating rooms. The synergy between the Italian volcanological experience and the AFAD emergency response structures aims to produce more precise seismic microzonation studies, providing government authorities with updated scientific data for urban planning and for the adaptation of building regulations in areas considered to be at greatest risk.
