Peru shares with Venezuela satellite images of the area devastated by earthquakes

The satellite, which has recorded some 500,000 images, is approaching the end of its useful life, so the authorities are already planning the launch of PerúSAT-2 within the next two years, according to the official Andina agency.

Conida’s support was added to the sending of a plane from the Peruvian Air Force (FAP), which left this Sunday for Caracas with more than 14 tons of humanitarian aid, and a team from the Urban Search and Rescue Unit (USAR, for its acronym in English) of the General Corps of Volunteer Firefighters.

Peruvian volunteers, who work in collapsed structures in the area of ​​Caraballeda, located in the state of La Guaira, the most affected by the earthquakes, have already intervened in the rescue of a 60-year-old woman alive from the rubble of a collapsed building, with the support of Salvadoran specialists.

Diplomatic relations between Peru and Venezuela are broken, and their diplomatic headquarters closed, since July 2024, after Lima denounced irregularities in the last presidential elections in that country and recognized the opposition candidate Edmundo González as the winner.

The second largest community of Venezuelan migrants and refugees resides in Peru, numbering around 1.6 million, most concentrated in the capital Lima, which means close to 5% of the country’s population.

The Venezuelan Caribbean was shaken this Wednesday, just 39 seconds apart, by two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, respectively, which have left, so far, 1,450 dead, 3,150 injured and 12,721 families affected.
