Instagram will remove prank and harassment videos secretly recorded with smart glasses like Ray-Ban Meta

Meta has decided to put the brakes on the proliferation of secretly recorded videos on Instagram in which smart glasses such as Ray-Ban Meta are used, which seek to attract attention with unpleasant jokes in public places.

The use of devices like the Ray-Ban Meta to secretly record people has become a problem for the company, taking advantage of the fact that the frame resembles that of normal glasses to go unnoticed, despite the fact that they have a flashing white light when the camera is in use.

In recent months they have proliferated on social networks videos with pranks on anonymous people that sometimes turn into harassment many directed against employees of stores or fast food restaurants, and of supposed seducers who record themselves while approaching women in places such as gyms or the street without the targets being aware that they are being recorded, as reported in Business Insider.

“We don’t want people secretly recording videos of other people, harassing them, and then posting them on our platform,” Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said in a video shared in a story on the social network, in which he assured that They are going to remove this type of content.

Although the impact of this measure is unclear, it is not the first he has adopted in an attempt to make wearing his glasses less creepy. The company decided in early July to launch a mandatory privacy update for its smart glasses that disable the camera when someone tampers or breaks the ‘capture LED’, to prevent them from secretly recording.
