Uli Latukefu will play Ganondorf in the live-action The Legend of Zelda film.

Australian actor Uli Latukefu will play Ganondorf, the main antagonist in Sony and Nintendo’s live-action The Legend of Zelda film. The news, reported by Deadline, comes from sources close to the production: according to leaks, Latukefu has signed a multi-film deal for the saga. Ganondorf is the sorcerer-king who in the video game saga attempts to conquer the kingdom of Hyrule, threatening the protagonists Link and Princess Zelda.

This is the first casting announcement since the announcement of the two main actors in July last year: Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Until now, the production had been keeping the casting details strictly confidential. Sony has not commented on the matter.

The project was announced in the fall of 2023, when Sony announced its partnership with Nintendo for the film’s financing and distribution. Wes Ball, known for the Planet of the Apes saga, has been appointed to direct, while Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad are producing. The screenplay, in its most recent version, is by T.S. Nowlin. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on May 7, 2027.

The Legend of Zelda, created by Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, debuted on Nintendo consoles in 1986. The saga tells the story of the elf warrior Link and Princess Zelda, as they fight to defend the fantasy kingdom of Hyrule from the evil Ganon, a sorcerer turned demonic ruler. Over the decades, the series has sold over 150 million copies, with chapters that have become part of the medium’s history, such as Ocarina of Time, released in 1998.

In addition to his breakout role in Young Rock, Latukefu has starred in films such as Black Adam, Next Goal Wins, and MaXXXine, as well as the Prime Video series Countdown. He is represented by Gersh, RGM Artists, Artists First, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
