The strange situation started when a woman acted as a surrogate for another couple.

As part of the fertilization treatments, she underwent an embryo transfer in April 2025. Around the same time, the woman unexpectedly became pregnant naturally. Ultrasound examinations revealed that the 27-year-old woman was expecting twins, who, based on DNA tests, had different parents.

The baby girl and baby boy were born last November. Since then, the babies have lived separately from their biological parents.

Case has come up in Australia when the court has had to take a stand on the case. According to the surrogacy laws of the state of Queensland, siblings may not be separated in a multiple pregnancy.

But are babies from different parents siblings if they develop in the womb at the same time? According to the law, they don’t, at least in the way intended by the law.

The decision was supported by the fact that the families have been in contact with each other and told that they intend to raise the children so that they know each other.

The judge considered that there is no scientific evidence that twins separated at birth would suffer psychological harm just from the separation if they grow up in stable and nurturing conditions.
