Researchers developed “beef rice” – Science

Pink rice imitates the taste of meat. It contains bovine cells.

South Koreans researchers believe they have developed a new protein-rich food in the laboratory that could replace part of traditional meat production. It is about the so-called “beef rice”, reports the Reuters news agency.

The rice is pink in color, and its taste tends to imitate meat.

To develop beef rice, researchers grew real beef cells inside a grain of rice.

Professor at Yonsei University in Seoul Jinkee Hong’s according to rice is well suited as a culture medium for animal cells. According to Hong, animal cells have now been cultured inside a grain of rice for the first time.

Still, Hong’s team is not the first to try to market products developed in a laboratory that contain “meat”.

According to Hong, rice production leaves a smaller carbon footprint than traditional beef products. He believes it could become a competing product for beef.
