“Extraordinary threat” to US security
The Cuban president is not afraid of assassination
Despite the heavy pressure, Dias-Canel clarified in an interview with “Newsweek” that his country will fiercely defend itself: “We will always strive to prevent war, but if military aggression occurs, we will fight back and defend ourselves.” Despite the recent assassinations of leaders in Iran and Venezuela, the Cuban president clarified that he does not fear for his life: “The leadership of the country and the revolution is collective, and decisions are made jointly.”
At the same time as the tensions, Cuba is trying to promote a diplomatic solution. Dias-Canel confirmed that talks had begun with American officials, but admitted that the process was “difficult”.
A White House official confirmed that talks are taking place between the parties, but added a sting: “Cuba is a failed nation whose rulers have suffered a severe blow with the loss of support from Venezuela.” Díaz-Canel concluded his remarks by criticizing Washington’s conduct, which he said offers talks to other nations only to attack them afterward, creating deep distrust among the Cuban people.
