Turkey detains 10 suspects in connection with shooting near Israeli consulate

Turkish authorities have detained 10 people on suspicion of involvement in a shooting near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, Turkish media reported. One of the attackers was killed during a shootout with the police, two attackers were wounded and are in hospital custody.

The remaining eight suspects were detained during police operations in Istanbul and the neighboring province of Kocaeli, Haaretz reported.

Authorities have not yet revealed the motive for the attack, and the investigation is ongoing. Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said the three attackers were linked to a group that “exploits religion”, without specifying which group they were referring to. According to him, two of them were brothers who arrived in a rented car from the city of Izmit.

Turkish authorities said the attacker, Yunus Emre Sarban, who was killed on the spot, had previously been linked to financial networks linked to the Islamic State terrorist organization and had his assets frozen in 2021.
