Nigeria is investigating a bloody raid on a village that killed 200 people

Nigeria has ordered a comprehensive, independent investigation into a military airstrike on a market, believed to have killed at least 200 people, while defending the operation, saying it targeted militants based in an enclave controlled by a rebel group.
The air strike that took place on Saturday was the latest in a series of raids that caused a large number of civilian casualties in northeastern Nigeria, where battle lines overlap.
In light of the militants’ control of areas of land, markets, and supply routes, and the movement of civilians through prohibited areas in search of a livelihood, human rights groups have warned that raids targeting the areas under conflict entail great risks of killing innocent people.

Information Minister Muhammad Idris expressed his regret over the casualties and deaths among civilians, and said that the air force bombed “confirmed terrorist targets” in the village of Gili, a highly dangerous restricted area in Gubio province.
