Austria’s former national goalkeeper Alexander Manninger, who also played for FC Augsburg, died in a traffic accident. According to reports, the 48-year-old’s car collided with a local train in the Salzburg area. The car was hit and dragged while crossing a railway crossing, the police said. The cause of the accident is still unclear, it said.
The Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) is mourning the loss of an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football, said ÖFB sports director Peter Schöttel.
38 games for Augsburg, stops in the Premier League
Manninger played 33 times for Austria during his career. He played in 38 competitive games for FC Augsburg between 2012 and 2016. He was also under contract with Arsenal FC, Liverpool FC and Juventus Turin.
FCA managing director Michael Ströll reacted with great dismay to the death of the long-time Augsburg goalkeeper. “Alex was not only a first-class goalkeeper, but also an outstanding person who was valued across borders and whose style enriched our team and our entire club.”
ÖFB sports director Schöttel went on to say that Manninger had set standards with his international career “and inspired and influenced many young goalkeepers.” Arsenal FC also mourned the goalkeeper with an X post.
