Former Donald Trump lawyer disbarred in California for ‘unethical lies’

As CNN reports, John Eastman was accused of having hatched a plan to help Donald Trump stay in power after his defeat in the 2020 election. He was singled out for spreading false theories of electoral fraud, so that then-Vice President Mike Pence could invalidate the election.

“Effectively control abuse of power”

“His unethical actions have had real and lasting consequences for our democracy, and we welcome the California Supreme Court’s decision to disbar him,” the United States Democracy Center, a nonprofit organization that aims to protect elections, said in a statement.

“This decision is part of a broader movement to question the rule of law in this country,” explains Christine P. Sun of the United States Democracy Center. John Eastman’s license to practice law had already been temporarily revoked two years ago. “Eastman failed in his primary duty of honesty and violated his ethical obligations by presenting falsehoods to support his legal arguments,” the judge wrote at the time.

In addition to his disbarment, Eastman also faces a $5,000 fine.
