The USA have that Withdrawal of 5,000 soldiers from Germany announced, thus deepening the gap with the NATO countries in Europe. The withdrawal should be completed within six to twelve months, Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell said on Friday evening. With around 35,000 active soldiers, Germany is the largest base of the US military in Europe and serves as an important training center.
Tense relations between the USA and NATO allies
US President Donald Trump threatened a withdrawal a few days ago. Previously, the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the US and said the Iranians were humiliating the US in negotiations to end the two-month-old war.
However, the already tense relationship between the USA and most of the other NATO allies had deteriorated further in the weeks before. Trump has accused Western countries of not supporting the US in its war against Iran. They had stated that they had not been consulted from the beginning of the war and that the NATO countries’ obligation to provide assistance did not apply because the USA and Israel had attacked Iran. Trump recently also said that a withdrawal of US soldiers from Italy and Spain was conceivable.
36,400 US soldiers in Germany
According to data from the US Department of Defense, around 68,000 US soldiers were permanently stationed at European bases in December 2025. More than half of them, around 36,400, were in Germany. During his first term as US President, Trump had repeatedly threatened to withdraw US soldiers from Germany.
A senior U.S. Defense Department official said Friday evening that the withdrawal from Germany would return the number of U.S. troops in Europe to pre-2022 levels, before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine prompted a U.S. troop surge by then-President Joe Biden. A brigade combat team currently stationed in Germany is being withdrawn from Germany, and a long-range fire battalion that the Biden administration had planned to be sent to Germany in 2026 will no longer be deployed.
