Spain condemns the attack on a French nun after a sectarian attack in Jerusalem

The Spanish Government has conveyed this Saturday its condemnation of the attack suffered on Tuesday by a French nun at the hands of an individual already detained, in what both the Israeli Police, the French Government and the institution for which the victim worked consider as a sectarian attack against the Christian population of the city, an occasional target of assaults by Jewish extremists.

The detainee, 36 years old, was recorded by security cameras while he gave a strong push to the nun, a researcher at the French School of Biblical and Archaeological Studies in Jerusalem (ÉFAB, for its acronym in French), when she was walking in front of the Tomb of David. The nun is evolving favorably from her injuries.

In its statement of condemnation published this Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain “expresses its strong condemnation” of this “serious aggression”, expresses its solidarity with the victim and “its wishes for a speedy recovery.”

The Spanish Government demands that the person responsible for the aggression be held “accountable before justice” and that Israel “guarantee freedom of religion, respect the status quo in Jerusalem and adopt measures to prevent this type of violent acts.”

It should be remembered that the French Government has also declared this aggression an “anti-Christian” and “intolerable” act before requesting, in the words of its Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, an “exemplary punishment” for the aggressor.
