The Iranian government criticized Donald Trump’s statements about the seizure of Iranian vessels. The president claimed that the US Navy acted “like pirates” during operations at sea.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei reacted on social media. He said Trump made a “direct admission” of what he considered to be the “criminal character of American actions.”
According to Baghaei, the seizure of ships violates international law. The diplomat also criticized the naval blockade imposed by the United States against Iran.
Trump declared that American forces “landed” on vessels and took cargo and oil. He stated that the practice is “very profitable” and compared the action to piracy.
The Iranian spokesman called for international reaction. He requested that the United Nations (UN) reject any attempt to normalize these actions.
Iran proposes end to blockade after standoff with US in Strait of Hormuz
The blockade in the Strait of Hormuz began on April 13. The measure came after the failure of negotiations between the two countries held in Islamabad. Conversations have remained at a standstill since then. However, Iran presented a new proposal to end the conflict.
The proposal includes an end to the naval blockade. It also provides guarantees against military attacks and the withdrawal of American forces from the region. Trump said he will analyze the Iranian plan. Still, he said he can’t imagine the proposal being acceptable.
Tehran is trying to mobilize external support. The government seeks support from UN member countries to pressure Washington.
