West Bank: EU almost ready to sanction settlers and Hamas militants

Next Monday in Brussels the foreign ministers of the EU member states could reach a meeting political agreement on sanctions on violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank. Ministers will discuss it in the Council with a number of “options” on the table, but it’s not certain, at present, that an agreement can actually be reached.

“We are approaching the moment when there will be unanimity on this,” explained a senior EU official, because until now measures against settlers in the West Bank had been blocked by Viktor Orban’s Hungary, which lost the general election. Peter Magyar of Tisza, however, has not yet formed a government.

The EU Council, in particular, is working on a “combination” of sanctions against violent settlers and Hamas militants. It is uncertain whether a political agreement can actually be reached on Monday, given that Budapest does not yet have a new government which “leaves us in limbo,” but “this could change between now and Monday.”
