Animal disease: Dahme-Spreewald relaxes measures due to Newcastle disease

The restrictions around Wolzig, which are due to an outbreak of the disease in the Oder-Spree district, also remain in place. The lifting of the restriction zones and the restrictions there does not mean that the farms can be occupied with animals again, it said.

Illness broke out in a turkey farm in Oder-Spree

In February, the highly contagious disease broke out in a turkey fattening flock in the Oder-Spree district. At the beginning of March, the animal disease broke out in the Dahme-Spreewald district. 21 outbreaks were detected in the district within five weeks – this was an “animal disease event on an unprecedented scale”. There have been no new outbreaks of the disease since April 7th. Regional restriction zones still apply in Oder-Spree and Märkisch-Oderland.

Several districts had banned the exhibition of poultry to curb the spread. So far, 21 outbreaks of the animal disease have been detected in Brandenburg. Tens of thousands of animals had to be killed. The virus can be transmitted through the air, contaminated materials or through adhesion to footwear, clothing or machines. In Germany, poultry are required to be vaccinated against Newcastle disease. The disease last appeared in Germany in 1996.
