5 out of 7 people trapped in a flooded cave for a week in Laos have been found by rescue forces.
“We have found 5 people alive and they are all safe. We are currently looking for two more people,” the Lao People’s Volunteer Rescue Team posted on social networks today.
Thai rescue worker Kengkach Bangkawong also posted on Facebook confirming that five people were found at around 4:30 p.m.

A group of 7 people entered the cave to search for gold in Xaisomboun province, central Laos, about 125 km northeast of the capital Vientiane, from May 20 and got stuck when heavy rain caused flash floods blocking the exit. According to Laos news agency, they were stuck deep inside the cave, clinging to a high cliff.
Rescue diving expert Mikko Paasi from Finland today said that rescuers needed to “pass through hundreds of meters of narrow, flooded tunnels, at risk of collapse and high air pollution” inside the cave.
Bounkham Luanglath, leader of the Lao People’s Volunteer Rescue Team, said local people often come to this area to search for gold seams, despite government warnings of risks.
