Mattarella: "Consolidate trust between institutions and citizens"

“Consolidate the architecture of trust between institutions and citizens, reviving in each one the most authentic sense of democratic participation, it is a persistent task in the life of the Republic”. This was declared by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella in a message sent to the Prefects on the occasion of the Republic Day. In a passage of his reflection the Head of State addresses in particular “those who lead public offices” who, in the exercise of their mandate “with listening skills, intelligent reading of emerging social dynamics, sensitivity to situations of hardship and greater fragility, are of great value in developing effective responses”. Also on this – he underlines – “the future of the country depends”. “Supporting the fabric of the social fabric, intercepting, together with schools and other educational agencies, the needs, questions and expectations of the young generations, enhancing their talents and potential, is fundamental”, insists Mattarella, underlining how “dialogue, listening, and proximity are essential canons for interpreting any civic responsibility oriented towards social cohesion”.

“Projecting the ideals of the Republic onto the EU horizon”

“The national community, in remembering those founding moments today, renews its convinced adherence to republican ideals, projected onto the European horizon”, explains the President of the Republic, recalling “the faces and civil passion of many citizens”, women and men of the institutions, who “generously, in eighty years of life of the Republic, in the most diverse roles and circumstances, have contributed to its development, spending themselves for the common good, sometimes to the point of heroism and the sacrifice of their own existence”.

“June 2, 1946 marked a new pact”

“On 2 June 1946, the vote of the Italian people marked – after the twenty years of fascism, the tragedy of war, the struggle for liberation – a turning point in the history of the country, laying the foundations for building, on the solid foundations of the Constitution, a new civil pact, inspired by the principles of freedom, equality and solidarity, driven by an intense thirst for peace” recalls Mattarella.

“The Constitution lives in those who serve the community”

“I values ​​of the Constitution they live in the action of those who place themselves at the service of the community”, explains the Head of State. On this occasion the national community renews the memory of those founding moments, and “it does so by recalling the faces and civil passion of many citizens, of many women and men of the institutions, who generously, in eighty years of life of the Republic, in the most diverse roles and circumstances, have contributed to its development, spending themselves for the common good, sometimes to the point of heroism and the sacrifice of their own existence”. In particular, he adds Mattarella, “the work of the Prefects, unfolding every day in the guarantee of democratic freedoms, promoting legality and security, promptly addressing the emergence of emergency situations in the coordination of the activities of the institutions, of associations, of volunteers, is precious for our community, also in the field of social conflicts, of crisis situations, in which dignity and safety of work, the foundation of our coexistence, are at risk”.

“The Republic was born from an exercise in democracy”

“The Republic was born from a sincere and unanimous spirit exercise of democracy“, continues Mattarella. Of that democratic exercise, the Head of State further underlines, “the protagonists were the Italian people who flocked to the polls with extraordinary participation and composure, for the choice of the system of the State and the election of the Constituent Assembly. Women in particular were the protagonistscalled to the polls for the first time in the history of Italy, for the administrative elections during that year and for the consultations on 2 June”.
