Trump administration adjusts tariffs on steel, aluminum and copper

US President Donald Trump signed a new document this Monday (1st) to change tariffs related to the import of steel, aluminum and copper.

According to the White House, the adjustment reduces taxes on foreign agricultural equipment, such as harvesters and reapers, and other equipment not specified in the proclamation, from 25% to 15%.

On the other hand, the measure expands the list of industrial equipment subject to a 15% tariff. From now on, mobile industrial goods imported from countries with trade agreements, such as tractors and forklifts, will be subject to the new charge.

The tariff changes announced this week are valid until December 31, 2027, according to the American government, and aim to encourage short-term investments within the national territory.

According to the document signed by Trump, the measure aims to encourage foreign companies to use more US steel and aluminum, “allowing them to qualify for a 10% import tax if their capital equipment includes, by weight, at least 85% steel or aluminum cast and cast or cast and molded in the US.”

The White House imposed tariffs on imported steel and aluminum in March last year. Two months later, President Donald Trump announced that he would increase the charge from 25% to 50%. In July, Trump announced a 50% tariff on all copper imports.

The decision comes on the same day that the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) concluded a trade investigation against Brazil and suggested the application of a 25% tariff on some Brazilian products imported into the country.
