Private conversation in the Kremlin: Putin is said to have met former Chancellor Schröder

According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) for a one-on-one meeting. “Yes, they met. It was a good conversation”said Putin’s foreign policy advisor, Yuri Ushakov, to the Interfax agency. He was unable to provide any information about the content or possible prospects for negotiations between Russia and the European Union. The meeting therefore took place in the Kremlin in Moscow.

Putin recently had Schröder as possible mediator for talks between the EU and Russia called. The 82-year-old is friends with the Kremlin leader and worked as a lobbyist for Russian energy companies after his time in government. The proposal was rejected in Germany and other EU countries.

Relations between the EU and Russia have been severely strained by the Russian war against neighboring Ukraine, which has been ongoing since 2022.
