Lebanese Ministry of Culture: Israel damaged ancient Tyre, a UNESCO site

Representatives of the Lebanese Ministry of Culture reported that as a result of Israeli strikes, damage was caused to the ruins of the ancient Phoenician city of Tyre, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

Tyre, the main city of Phenicia and one of the oldest centers of civilization in the eastern Mediterranean, is located 20 kilometers north of the Lebanese-Israeli border. During the latest confrontation, the IDF repeatedly ordered the evacuation of the city.

“According to legends, purple dye was invented in Tyre. This great Phoenician city was a powerful maritime power and founded prosperous colonies such as Cadiz and Carthage, but its historical role declined at the end of the Crusades. The important archaeological finds discovered here date mainly to the ancient Roman era,” UNESCO said.
