Petro writes “Heil Hitler” in response to newspaper article

The leftist president wrote the message this Sunday (7), sharing an article by Felipe Zuleta Lleras, columnist for the newspaper El Espectador, criticizing Petro’s candidate, Iván Cepeda, and praising Espriella.

“Faced with the statist and left-wing model represented by Iván Cepeda in this second round, Espriella offers individual freedom, private property and traditional institutions,” wrote Zuleta.

Espriella received the most votes in the first round of the presidential election, held on May 31st, and will face Cepeda in the second round, on the 21st.

Petro’s comment generated criticism from the Israeli government, with whom the current Colombian president broke diplomatic relations due to the war in the Gaza Strip.

“President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, regardless of what is happening in your personal life, there are limits that should never be crossed. Using Nazi slogans is a shameful extreme, from which there is no return”, wrote Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, in X, who asked the president to apologize.

“I hope you come to your senses and apologize before this Wednesday (10), when you are scheduled to preside over the debate at the United Nations Security Council,” he wrote.
