Vietnam welcomes the US – Iran reaching a peace agreement

The statement was made by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang on June 15, when commenting on the US and Iran announcing a peace agreement.

“Vietnam calls on relevant parties to soon sign and fully implement the agreement, creating conditions for reaching a comprehensive and sustainable solution, bringing peace and stability to the Middle East region, including the Strait of Hormuz, on the basis of international law and the United Nations (UN) Charter, for the benefit of countries in the region, for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world,” Ms. Hang said.

The US and Iran previously announced they had reached an agreement to end the conflict, in which the US would “immediately” lift the maritime blockade with Iran. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the mediator, said Washington and Tehran agreed to immediately and permanently end military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, adding that the agreement would be signed in Switzerland on June 19.

US President Donald Trump also announced that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened “without transit fees”. “Ships around the world should start their engines. Let the oil flow,” he said.

A senior Iranian official revealed that the draft agreement has a provision that the US will release $25 billion in Iran’s frozen assets, while Tehran agrees not to produce or possess atomic weapons.

Iran also agreed to maintain the status quo of its nuclear program, without enriching uranium or expanding its nuclear facilities, until a final agreement is reached.

According to a US official, the final agreement will lead to an end to Iran’s nuclear program, with the country’s highly enriched uranium stockpile destroyed and eliminated. Senior Iranian officials say the draft deal would allow Tehran to dilute highly enriched uranium domestically.
